Day 10: Headed Home

Hello. After a beautiful rainy morning on Southwater caye and a smooth boat ride back to the mainland, the class headed out on tropic air flights back to Belize International and eventually home.  Goodbye Southwater Caye - our bit of paradise!

Day 9: Southwater Caye

Hi everyone!  We're here on Southwater Caye. It's raining right now so our snorkeling is delayed a bit until after lunch. We've had a couple lectures and games and we're relaxing so we'll be ready for a snorkel later when this storm passes!  Yesterday was beautiful, sunny and calm. See pictures below (coming soon) from yesterday when we arrived on the island!

FRANCIS: Hello people! Ayer llegamos a South Water Caye y tenemos luz, agua caliente y hasta internet! Hicimos snorkeling y pudimos ver el reef y los pecesitos, fue canson pero valio la pena :D Las cabanas están preciosas y tenemos una hermosa vista a la playa. Ayer dormi afuera en la hamaca hasta que me ataco un aguacero jaja Le he cogido mucho cariño a todo el grupo y ahora estoy pensando como me voy a despedir de ellos mañana. Gracias a todos por compartir conmigo esta magnifica experiencia! :’)

RUBY: Para la familia de Ruby: Hola! Ya mañana vuelvo! Ayer llegamos a un  cayito, está bien brutal, es bien lindo, el agua es bien clarita y la arena es suuuper blanca! Hoy está lloviendo pero esperemos que se ponga soleado. Joshua espero que tengas buen viaje, no sé cuando pueda llamarte pero Te amo. Rápido que pueda comunicarme contigo lo hare.

DAMARIS:  OMG this place  (southwater caye) is AMAZING. It feels like heaven after Cockscomb tropical survival challenge. I snorkeled for the for first time,found some cool stuff I cant even name and opened up a clam =D.  Other than that, I got cramps in both my legs, almost died but kristy saved me with her Kajak. Then I stole her kajack plus her sunglasses and started chasing a duck that was in the water. All in all, I’ve had an awesome time, which is why I just HAD to blog about it for the first time. I feel like a champion, I almost forgot..the smoothies here are out of this world!!!

JOSE: Bendicion! Todo esta bien hoy por la manana estaremos cogiendo unas clases y descansando par aver sip or la tarde se puede ir a la playa otra vez. Todo esta bien y contando con dios nos veremos mañana cuídense!

Day 8: Maya culture and Southwater Caye

Good morning! Today we're saying goodbye to the Cockscomb Basin and the excellent food of Mr. and Mrs Saqui. (Thank you!)   We're looking forward to visiting Maya Center village at the women's co-op arts/crafts shop and touring the Maya culture museum. Then, we are off to Southwater caye in time for lunch and an afternoon "Snorkeling 101" lesson in the calm warm Caribbean sea.  We'll get to explore the inner tidal area this evening and hopefully see sea horses, octopus, and other fascinating sea creatures.  We'll be spending the next couple days studying reef and mangrove ecology! :)

Day 7: Aquatic Ecology and Natural History day

Hi everyone!  The class is participating in a stream survey today where they are studying with Ed Boles and Lisa Bentson looking at aquatic ecology, fishes, invertebrates, etc. Lenney will also show people a few jungle survival skills and map and compass skills.  This is their last day in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

FRANCIS: Hello Everyone! Hoy fue un dia divertido! Estuvimos flotando rio abajo en tubos individuales Wiiiiiii!!!! :D Estamos un poco cansados pero todo ha sido muy interesante; he aprendido mucho y todos son muy cariñosos y atentos. Hoy es nuestro ultimo dia en la Reserva de Cockscomb y mañana nos vamos para la isla :’)  espero que estes bien flaca y dile a mami que todo esta bien, que no he hecho nada peligroso ;) y tal vez mañana la pueda llamar. TQM!

RUBY: Para la familia de Ruby: Mira, Mariangel, Joshua, Mami, me pueden dejar comments para no sentirme tan mal! Jajajajaa! Nada, estoy bien, ya mañana temprano nos vamos de donde nos estamos quedando en la jungla… Vamos para la playa por fiiiiiin! Estoy loca por volver. Joshua me haces faltaaaaa, quiero verte ya , aunque se que cuando llegues ya no vas a estar L. Rapido que pueda te voy a visitar. Te amo! Y  a todos los demás, los veo en 3 diassssss, queiro comida …. Mucha, me hace falta!

SHARLEEN: For Sharleen’s Family and Friends: Papito gracias por los comentarios! Me puse súper contenta cuando los leí! Te amo muchísimo. Estoy loca por verlos a todos y todas! Hoy fue un día muy divertido. Aprendimos un poco de cómo sobrevivir  en un Bosque Tropical e hicimos tubing en el rio de Cockscomb. La pasamos súper bien ya que era la primera vez para muchos de nosotros. Mañana nos vamos para la isla (wujuu!) y luego los veo en Puerto Rico:D! Me hacen mucha falta. Los amo mucho. JOSE: Jose Rivera: Bendicion. Todo esta bien. Hoy nos tiramos en un rio y fue bueno no ha pasado nada malo. Papi Y mami cuando vayan el sábado a la actividad de honor también habrá un reconocimiento de los estudiantes que fueron a la competencia. Ve a donde Prof. Luis Suarez o Prof. Martinez Cruzado o Ismael Pagan y les dices por que no fui. Erika contando con Dios todo está listo para que el 3 de junio vaya a Colorado a ese nuevo reto ha sido bueno por aca y todos estamos bien los papeles finales espero llenarlos con Kasey Cox la semana que vuelva a PR para el 3 de junio poder ir para alla. ANGEL: Hola a todos. Pues, que puedo decir, muchas experiencias buenas aquí en Cockscomb Basin: un hike horrible de cómo tres horas, seguido por unas cascadas brutales. Que más, hicimos tubing en el rio, cogimos unas culebras, pusimos trampas para atrapar animales y cámaras a ver si veíamos un jaguar. Ah, hice un pequeño experimento: me puse a jugar con los leaf cutter ants y los army ants, después les enseño los resultados. No tengo muchas fotos por que la cámara no quiere cargar, pero en el grupo hay fotos para que vean todo. Nada, mañana salimos para el arrecife y volvemos el domingo, nos vemos luego.  Att: Angel

Days 5 and 6: Fauna and Land Management Days

Hello everyone and thanks for following our field course blog!  The class spent Day 5 focusing on Wildlife/Fauna in Cockscomb. Everyone was up at 5:30 a.m. for coffee and mist netting on a nearby trail, then a lecture on population ecology from Dr. Sarah Corey-Rivas and Jesus Rivas. Later, wildlife ecology trail hikes were followed up by an evening stream survey (amphibian survey), night time insect collections (via black light/white sheet set up nearby) and then checking the camera traps to see if any tapirs or cats were captured on camera. They are getting a great look at Fauna in the Cockscomb!

NOTE: Our chefs - former park manager of the Cockscomb, Mr. Ernesto Saqui and his wife Aurora, a Maya healer, saw a juvenile jaguar crossing the road 3-4 miles from the dorm on their drive back from breakfast day 5.  We hope the camera traps will show some interesting footage of wildlife - hopefully the jaguar :) !

Today - Day 6:  The class will be touring nearby areas and villages to learn about different levels and types of land management. They will be visiting a banana plantation, a shrimp farm, a Maya farm (corn and/or cacao), and receiving a lunch and presentation at the Saqui's guest house/restaurant in Maya Center village (which is about 6 miles outside of Cockscomb reserve dorms and visitor center).  

Note: We'll try to post another update tomorrow night (late) depending on internet availability. Otherwise, Friday afternoon we'll post an update from Southwater caye located about 12 miles offshore from Dangriga town.

RENE: Yesterday I saw a Morpho Butterfly, I never dreamed of seeing it in real life! I am enjoying every day! The water fall from yesterday was amazing! And the scenic view was indescribably beauty full view, I was lucky to be in this trip=)

JOSE: RIVERA: Bendición, todo esta bien por acá no hay mucho que decir por que ya hablamos todo ayer. Anoche estuvo todo tranquilo y de la actividad del sábado en la universidad si pueden den la vuelta para alla el que pueda por que en Mayagüez hay pocas veces que se da esa actividad. Cuando termine recoge el certificado lo mas probable que el que los da sea Sharon Bado o Antonia las orientadoras del departamento. Y les explicas por que no estoy por ahí. También si esta por ahí el Prof. Raul Zapata le envías saludos de mi parte. Acuerdate que la actividad es en el edificio Stefani de la universidad. Bendicion saludos y nos veremos bye! 

Day 4: 'Vegetation day' and Tiger Fern waterfalls

Written yesterday (5/21), posted today:

A beautiful morning at Cockscomb Basin with mist netting at 6 a.m. before meeting for breakfast.  The Saqui’s whipped up eggs, beans, homemade corn tortillas, fruit, juice, unlimited coffee/tea – awesome!   Today’s lesson focused on vegetation starting with 2 lectures and a morning hike up to Tiger Fern Falls. Gorgeous swimming hole and waterfalls with refreshing cool water after a pretty challenging all-morning hike.  A heavy rain started at the end of the hike back to the dining area – very welcomed and refreshing!  A hot lunch was waiting and now a siesta…it can’t feel much better than this!

Today was 'vegetation day'. After 2 morning class lectures on botany and fire ecology with Dr. Sara Brown (fire ecologist) and Dr. Rick McNeill ("the botonist") both led the class on the day's field work and started logging flora species on the jungle trek to Tiger Fern falls. With all the vines, they found out how hard it really is to identify the tons of vegetation types here. They located a few pine trees near the overlook to take core samples to determine the age and health of the pines.  People are loving vegetation, flowers, and forest canopy!

DENVER: Hey all,  Denver here and I’m one of the two Belizeans on this trip with the Belize Field School. Thus far the experience has been awesome. Its day number 4 and now I now know how it feels to be a tourist in your own country having visited both the inland blue hole and St. Herman’s cave for the first time. Today was an interesting day, after a little mist netting, tree coring and hiking we did a little more than exchange scientific knowledge but I also got a little lesson in dancing salsa and meringue from the Puerto Rican students (I might just go  pro after this)……Beautiful experience.  Viva a la Belize Field School!!!

RICK (botany instructor): Help!!  I’m being held hostages by a bunch of college students from Puerto Rico, Belize and New Mexico.   So far they are treating me well, but to ensure my safety please send $100,000 US (they must not think I am worth much!) in small denomination non-consecutive bills.

FRANCIS:  Hello people!  This is Francis from Puerto Rico! Wiiii :D This has been a very interesting trip and I am enjoying a lot here! Ha sido una experiencia muy diferente a cualquiera que haya tenido antes. He cogido serpientes, cucarachas gigantes, un “stick”, bettles,  tarantula, y me bane con una cucaracha volando en mi ducha :O ahh y dormi en el mismo cuarto que dos ratones :/  (Vale: No le menciones la ultima oración a mami). No tenemos luz, ni teléfono, ni agua caliente…ha sido muy diferente a lo que acostumbro. Por otro lado, el grupo con al cual tengo la oportunidad de compartir es muy bueno, somos muy unidos y a todos nos esta gustando la experiencia. Hoy caminamos como 4 horas, casi escalando! Pero al final llegamos a un rio precioso con dos grandes cascadas (valio la pena el esfuerzo, pero espero que no se repita!) los profesores son muy buenos y se integran con cada estudiante del grupo. Siempre nos están hablando de cada pequeño detalle que se acuerden; estoy aprendiendo muchísimo  Hoy los boricuas le ensenamos a bailar salsa y merengue a nuestros compañeros. Espero seguir disfrutando/aprendiendo en los días que me quedan.  Bendicion mami! <3

LENNEY: Hi folks  my name is Lenney, I am the naturalist guide with the field school. So far it’s been really great, the students are learning a lot of new things, this is our fourth day in the program. Today we did an early morning  birding and mist netting, and then a big  hike to the double water fall on Tiger Fern Trail. We had a great view of the Cockscomb Basin and its spectacular peaks known as Victoria Peak, 3675ft above sea level. Tonight we are doing a night hike to set up some camera traps so hopefully we catch jaguars.  

JOSE: Bendición, lo que escribió Francis de las cucarachas y ratones es verdad pero fue al principio y ya se sacaron pero no te preocupes no es tan malo como crees solo que hay que caminar mucho y  eso estoy acostumbrado, estoy usando el fitter y mosquitero pero todo esta bien y tranquilo solo que no hay luz y puedes ver mas estrellas que las que se ven en Hatillo y no tengo senal de celular asi que sabras de mi por aquí hasta el viernes. Hablamos y todo tranquilo q estamos bien algunas veces exageran un poco como survivor jaja pero estamos bien Bendición bye.

Day 3: Blue Hole NP, St. Herman's Cave and Cockscomb!

Hello!  Day 3 already of the Belize Field School and the students are doing great. We arrived to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary this afternoon after a beautiful visit to the Blue Hole National Park and St. Herman’s cave. The class is staying in Cockscomb Reserve for 5 nights - leaving Friday morning for the cayes. More photos and stories of Cockscomb and their field work are coming tomorrow and through the week. 

After a catered traditional Maya supper from the Saqui's in Maya Center (and before their student presentations), students had a few minutes to send out messages and shout-outs below:

Tengo que decirles que esto esta pasao… Estamos literalmente en el medio de la jungla con Jaguares, Serpientes, cucarachas gigantezcas, mosquitos gigantes de todo… Deverdad que no se lo pueden  imaginar. Esto es una experencia que nunca imagine tener, y me esta probrando como persona. Pero estoy bien, hasta ahora, tratando de disfrutar lo mas que puedo con precaucion. Nada Pronto vuelvo. Te amo Joshua!<3

JOSE: For Jose Rivera family. Bendicion todo esta bien. Carlos le dices a papi que el favor que le pedi hoy domingo trate de hacerlo con calma si no  puede lograrlo alla en Mayaguez  que no se desepere por hacerlo eso es por si acaso pasa algo Acuerdate revisar mi email por si acaso llega algo importante. A Mami,Aby, Nilsa lo que escribio Ruby es verdad pero es cuando vamos de hiking y a ver el area. En el hospedaje no hay nada de leones ni cuacarachas gigantes. A todos saludos y cuando vean las fotos esten tranquilos no es lo que ustedes estan acostumbrados pero lo he disfrutado y no ha pasado nada malo, no voy a tener senal de cellular por las proxinas 4 noches incluyendo esta si logro tener me comunico.

ANGEL: Hey guys. Well, for a lab guy I’ve been pretty well. I’m getting used to the hiking and all the bugs. Oh, the places are beautiful, the food is great and camps are fantastic. I’ve never thought I would be swimming on rivers, catching HUGE giant cockroaches and climbing really tall mayan pyramids. So far, I’m not missing my micropipets!

Ahora en español, hola a todos. Espero que estén bien, yo la estoy pasando brutal aquí. Nunca pensé en meterme en ríos, coger cucarachas gigantes, nadar en cuevas con murciélagos y ponerme un escarabajo en la cara. Nada, pendientes a las fotos y nos vemos en varios días. ¡Nos vemos!

Just a quick hello and update..let me tell you this place is aMaZING! I’ve tracked through jungles, swam in rivers, and ate all the food I’d never eat back home…they have sopapillas here! Now we are stationed at this jaguar preserve center; straight jungle, Jurassic park style! Miss you all! Its going by fast, see you soon, love you and keep me in your prayers,

I’m having a blast! There is never a dull moment. There are even small lectures on the bus, which is a pleasant ride. I am learning a vast variety of biological things. And all the students and staff are really friendly.
